The Story

I’ve always been pale and had problems with the iron status in my body. Every time I had a blood test, my iron levels were found to be low, and my GP regularly prescribed iron tablets for me. Although my low iron values always improved after the medical treatment, I used to hate taking the tablets. When I had to take them, I suffered stomach pains, diarrhoea and vomiting on a daily basis. Although my iron values increased, it was only marginally, which was frustrating, and because of the severe side effects long-term medication with iron tablets was not an option for me.

The Journey

I visited the Biogena Check Up Lounge on my own initiative and had a full blood and Stool Analysis to check whether I suffered from leaky gut syndrome. The results showed a severe iron deficiency and other values indicative of leaky gut syndrome. Now I knew why my blood iron levels never really in- creased, despite medication – I basically had a leaky gut. On the basis of this, I was first treated with various gut-supporting supplements for six weeks, before taking two capsules of QuattroFerrin® 21 daily for six weeks, followed by one capsule for four weeks.

The Success

The treatment for my leaky gut syndrome quickly took effect – I was clearly much better as far as my health was concerned. In the next full blood analysis ten weeks later, my iron status had also made a marked improvement. Finally, I had normal values, and what is even better – QuattroFerrin® 21 didn’t cause me any gastrointestinal problems; it was very easy on my body. Later on, I had an IUD inserted, and my periods became heavier. I once again recognised the distinguishing symptoms of an iron deficiency. I quickly took action and once again started taking QuattroFerrin® 21, after which my exhaustion and circulatory problems once again disappeared. Since then, I always have my blood analysed and my iron levels checked on a regular basis every year – as a woman I believe this to be particularly important.

Lifestyle Changes

People with a non-diagnosed iron deficiency often feel tired and reach for drinks containing caffeine in the hope that these will perk them up. This popular pick-me-up contains polyphenols. Although these have a lot of health benefits, they can also interfere with iron absorption. It’s best then to make sure there is an interval of 2-3 hours between taking your iron supplement and consuming either coffee or tea.

Poor tolerability is a known problem with standard iron supplements. They can irritate the mucous membranes in the stomach and intestines due to their oxidative effect and lead to common symptoms such as nausea, stomach pains and diarrhoea. This can result in problems such as an imbalance in the gut flora or even leaky gut syndrome. However, in recent years plant-based iron supplements have come onto the market that have both good bioavailability and are easier to digest. This includes the iron from curry leaves, buckwheat and the mushroom Aspergillus oryzae.
